Hits Radio Manchester is owned by Bauer Media, a private media company based in London. It is a networked radio station, with this particular station being the main one for producing programming for the other Hits Radio regions across the UK. The Hits Radio brand is currently one of the fastest growing radio networks in the UK.

The station launched on 2nd April 1974 as Piccadilly Radio. Since then, further name changes meant new owners, and new directions for the radio station. In 2003, Bauer had control of this as it was called Key 103. They decided to place Key 103 as part of the Bauer City 3 network of stations, which in 2018 was renamed to what we know as Hits Radio today.

This radio station is a sister station to Greatest Hits Radio, a more popular classic hits network that took over the normally AM radio stations that accompanied the Hits-branded radio stations. Normally, if you pick this station up, you normally have the other listed in the same area.
